Lenke and African mahogany (Malinke: dialla) are extremely hard and dense tropical woods, found predominantly in Guinea and Mali. Traditionally these two woods were used for the construction of a djembe.
The djembes at djembemoves:
- can be identified from their colours (lenke is mostly a brownish/yellow,
dialla a dark red), and the pattern in the grain of the wood.
- have a diameter of at least 31 cms. Anything smaller is in the words of Sean’s
friends in Guinea "kids’ djembes". The height is normally about 60 – 63 cms.
- have been personally selected. Sean has established contact with various
suppliers of the wooden shells in Conakry, whom he visits every year.
- are all of the same highest quality, the onlys reason for any price difference
is the size, which affects the costs of the materials and assembly time.
Melina wood is the type of wood traditionally used for the construction of the doundouns. It has a distinctive pale colour and pattern in the grain of the wood. All of our doundouns are of the highest quality, only the size affects the
price due to the costs of the materials and the assembly time needed.
Doundouns normally have the following measurements:
- doundounba:
Ø 42+ cms l length 65-85 cms
- sangban:
Ø 30-37 cms l length 55-65 cms
- kensedeni:
Ø 25-29 cms l length 45-55 cms
