For those with more than two years experience of West African percussion music (particularly Malinke and Sousou of Guinea, and Malinke and Bambara of Mali), and for musicians with a background in another instrument/genre.
Please note that the following are general ideas only, and the material taught in each lesson/workshop depends on the abilities and wishes of the participants themselves.
- further development of the themes from the beginners course
- different 12/8 and 16/8 rhythms from Guinea and Mali
- introduction to and development of more complicated djembe and bass drum
patterns, including echauffements
- melodic and poly-rhythmic ideas in West African percussion music
- development of djembe solo playing
- introduction to ideas of communication between the players
- arrangements, breaks, signals
