The playing of drums in West Africa is an accompaniment to a festival. It forms (traditionally) the musical section of almost all social gatherings and celebrations, and exists solely for the enjoyment of all the participants. The playing of
drums is open to everybody, but normally as a child someone will show repeatedly that they are interested in learning this art. They are then instructed over many years so that they understand what is required of them at the many different festivals.

Different styles have developed in the many regions of this huge continent, different instruments are used, in varied formations, and the musical concepts behind the performance of the groups have evolved separately. The process for a drummer is however to learn not only the various instruments used, and the patterns and variations possible (or required) for each different occasion, but also the background to each rhythm, the songs to which each rhythm belongs and the
dance steps which accompany each part.
Playing the drums brings enjoyment and energy to the event being celebrated, and also to the players themselves, and it gives the player the opportunity to express his/herself musically and socially. This is the main focus of djembemoves. There is more information in the background section for those interested in the djembe in a West African context.
