Sean teaches rhythm and percussion music on the
djembe and
bass drums (Malinke: doundouns), with a focus on the traditional Guinean and Malian musical culture.
Sean has studied this music in private lessons with his
teachers, and by participating in the traditional (village) and modern (Conakry and Bamako) festivals. The focus in his lessons is on "learning by doing", as he believes the best way to progress in the long term is by repetition of the learnt material. The basic idea in Sean’s lessons is therefore play, and play, and play it again. Different people have however different methods of learning, and Sean therefore endeavours to incorporate traditional African (repetition) and modern western (analytical) methods in his teaching, and helps each participant in the way most useful to them. He also creates a relaxed and fun atmosphere, where everyone can at the same time feel comfortable and concentrated.
Every participant is given the room and freedom to learn at their own pace, and Sean can challenge every participant in a group so that the lesson is rewarding for everyone. Sean is aware that there are many reasons for people wanting to learn to play the
djembe, and each person is therefore free to experience the music and their own musical development in their own way.
The lessons for beginners are meant as an introduction to percussion/rhythmic music. For the more advanced we deal with specific rhythmic and musical themes from Guinea and Mali.
