Sean has travelled every year to
Guinea since 2000, spending a total of 22 months there. Together with traditional musicians of different villages and the capital city Conakry he has studied intensively the music and culture of Guinea. This has given him vast experience and knowledge of their musical culture and background, enabling him to play solo
djembe for the dance, and also the
bass drums together with the Guinean musicians at numerous festivals. He is focussed on the traditional Malinke
festivals, the
ballet style in Conakry and the solo accompaniment for West African dance. He is also interested in the songs and background associated with every rhythm.

Additionally, Sean has travelled to Bamako in Mali, in order to study the specific djembe styles of that country and particularly their unique shuffle and swing feelings (micro timing). He has thus acquired a versatile knowledge of djembe playing. Sean has further increased his knowledge in private lessons with first class traditional and modern musicians, such as
Nansady Keita,
Solo Keita,
Amadou Diakite, in Guinea und –
Drisa Kone,
Madou Diakite in Mali. Furthermore, he has played in diverse projects in Europe, bringing him through Germany and Poland.

Sean passes on his knowledge and experience as a
djembe teacher to all his students with passion and patience. Every participant feels individually challenged, and because Sean brings together the African method of learning (repetition) and the modern western method (analytical), every student receives the information in the way which helps them best. The lessons are relaxed, but concentrated, and designed to ensure that the enjoyment of playing this
music and these
instruments is first and foremost.

As a professional musician, Sean places great worth on the quality of
instruments he and his students play. He has therefore devoted a great deal of time to learning the art of assembling
djembes and
bass drums with drum makers from the villages and also the city, thereby developing a fine sense for the quality of an instrument. Sean is concerned with the aesthetic appearance of the instruments and more importantly the sound of a finished instrument. Hence you will only find high quality instruments for sale at djembemoves.
